Lungora Review: Can Any Supplement Actually Detox Your Lungs?

The entire premise of this product category rests on one assumption: that lungs accumulate something which needs clearing out. It is worth examining that assumption directly, because if it is wrong the product has nothing to do.

How clearance actually works

Your airways are lined with ciliated epithelium — cells carrying hair-like projections that beat roughly twelve times a second in a coordinated wave. Above them sits a two-layer mucus blanket: a watery layer the cilia beat within, and a sticky gel layer on top that traps particles.

The wave moves that gel layer steadily upward at about a centimetre a minute, toward the throat, where it is swallowed without you noticing. This is the mucociliary escalator, and it runs continuously from birth.

Below the bronchioles, where there are no cilia, alveolar macrophages patrol and engulf particles directly. Between the two systems, a healthy lung is being cleaned every minute of every day.

What impairs it, and what restores it

The escalator can be damaged, and smoking is the main way. Smoke paralyses cilia within minutes and destroys them with chronic exposure, while simultaneously increasing the number of mucus-producing cells. More mucus, less clearance.

The intervention that reverses this is stopping. Cilia begin regenerating within one to nine months, which is exactly why so many ex-smokers cough more for a period afterwards — clearance has restarted and there is backlog to move. That cough is the system working, not a problem.

Other genuine helps: hydration keeps mucus less viscous, airway clearance techniques are taught in respiratory physiotherapy, and N-acetylcysteine has real mucolytic evidence. Note that NAC is not in this formula.

Why the framing does harm

If “lung detox” were merely useless the criticism would be about money. It is worse than that for two reasons.

First, the material that genuinely persists in damaged lungs — tar deposits, asbestos fibres, silica — cannot be removed by anything taken orally. Implying otherwise offers false reassurance to exactly the people who need to act.

Second, it substitutes. Someone worried enough about their lungs to buy a cleanse is someone who should be getting spirometry, or cessation support, or both. A capsule that feels like doing something is the most effective way to delay doing the thing that works.

The vasoconstrictor nobody warns about

Butcher’s broom is the inclusion we would question first, and not only because it has no airway research.

Its evidence base is venous: chronic venous insufficiency, varicose veins, leg oedema, haemorrhoids. It works by constricting blood vessels to improve venous tone. That is the mechanism, not a side effect.

This product is marketed to adults over 50 — the group most likely to have hypertension and to be taking something for it. A vasoconstrictor that can raise blood pressure and work against antihypertensive treatment belongs on the label with a warning. The official page gives none. If you take anything for blood pressure, this single paragraph is the reason to speak to a pharmacist before ordering.

Buy a peak flow meter and record a baseline fortnight before your first capsule so you have a number rather than an impression.
