Lungora Turmeric Review: The Absorption Problem Nobody Mentions

Turmeric is the ingredient buyers are most likely to recognise and feel reassured by. It is also the one where a missing line on the label makes the largest difference to whether anything happens at all.

The short version

Curcumin alone is very poorly absorbed. Trials showing effects almost always use an enhanced preparation or add piperine. Lungora states neither.

The bioavailability problem

Curcumin, the principal curcuminoid in turmeric, has a well-documented absorption problem. Taken as plain powder it is poorly soluble in water, poorly absorbed across the gut wall, rapidly metabolised by the liver and quickly eliminated. Blood levels after an ordinary dose are very low.

This is not a fringe concern — it is the central practical issue in curcumin research and the reason an entire industry of enhanced formulations exists. Phospholipid complexes, nanoparticle preparations and piperine co-administration all address the same problem.

What positive trials actually used

Almost without exception, the human trials showing meaningful effects on joint comfort, inflammatory markers or mood used one of those enhanced preparations, or added piperine from black pepper, which slows curcumin’s metabolism and raises blood levels considerably.

Studies using unenhanced curcumin powder generally show much weaker effects, consistent with the fact that very little of it reaches circulation.

Two numbers therefore matter on any turmeric label: the standardisation percentage (how much of the extract is actually curcuminoids) and whether an absorption enhancer is present. Lungora states neither, alongside stating no milligram amount.

What that leaves you with

Three unknowns stacked on top of each other: how much extract, what percentage curcuminoids, and whether anything helps it absorb. Multiply three unknowns together and the amount reaching your bloodstream is not estimable even approximately.

It is worth adding the caution too, because turmeric is popularly regarded as harmless and is not entirely. It affects platelet function and may increase bleeding risk with anticoagulants or before surgery, it stimulates bile flow so it is inappropriate in gallbladder obstruction, and it can reduce iron absorption.

If turmeric is what you want, buy a product that publishes its standardisation and names its absorption technology. Those exist and they are not expensive.

When the symptom is the point

This is the part of the review that matters most, and it has nothing to do with value for money.

The symptoms this product is marketed against — breathlessness, a persistent cough, chest tightness — are the symptoms of conditions that are diagnosable and treatable. COPD, asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, heart failure and lung cancer all present this way.

A cough lasting more than three weeks, new or worsening breathlessness, wheezing or any blood needs medical assessment, particularly over 50 and particularly for anyone who smokes or used to. Spirometry takes about ten minutes. COPD is routinely diagnosed years later than it could be, and the lung function lost in those years does not come back.

Three months on capsules while that goes unexamined is the most expensive purchase in this category, and the cost is not the money.

Independent background reading, none of it selling anything: the FDA dietary supplement overview, MedlinePlus on dietary supplements and CDC quit-smoking resources. For the applied version of this on our own pages, see what the product actually is or the Lungora official website reference.

What we would do

Take the ingredient list to a pharmacist before ordering — blood pressure, anticoagulant, diabetes and thyroid medication all intersect with this formula. Buy a peak flow meter and record a baseline fortnight before your first capsule so you have a number rather than an impression. Choose the three-bottle package rather than the six, since ninety days is a fair assessment window and it does not leave four months of capsules outside a 60-day guarantee. And diarise day 50 on the day you order.

Frequently asked

No. No milligram amounts appear on the sales page or in the FAQ, and no Supplement Facts panel is displayed anywhere on the site.

Two bottles $178 ($89 each) plus shipping, three bottles $216 ($72 each) with free US shipping, or six bottles $294 ($49 each) with free US shipping. There is no single-bottle option.

The package prices are real and the totals multiply correctly. The $179-per-bottle reference price the savings are measured against is not a price anyone has paid.

Sixty days from purchase. Note that the largest package is a 180-day supply, so two thirds of it falls outside the refund window from the moment it arrives.

Disclaimer. This formula contains butcher's broom, a vasoconstrictor that may raise blood pressure, and both turmeric and coenzyme Q10, which affect anticoagulation in opposite directions.
